14 Light Crescent, Mount Barker, S.A.

This is a building commissioned by Mount Barker developers Anrica Nominees, in 2004. They asked for a building with a floor area of about 800 sqm, steel portal frames of 5 metres clear height, concrete floors, staff amenities, showroom and carpark, to be ideal as a bulky good warehouse or workshop for light industry. It was the second building which Anrica had asked us to design. We knew there were thousands of light-industrial buildings which are remarkable for their undistinguished appearance, and resolved to make one which looked terrific, but cost no more than the undistinguished type. This is it: curved sides cost no more than straight, and the curved top of the parapet at front resolved an integrated form for the building. Two colours of corrugated cladding cost no more than one, but provided the building with a bold identity. It was leased just after completion and retains the original lessee.
